Economic Stimulus In the Wrong Hands

The Issue: The nation’s economy is in dire straits, but Congress, whose charge is fixing the problem, has demonstrated one thing: They’re not up to the job.

What I Think: As Ronald Reagan always maintained: The Federal government is not the solution, it’s the problem. indeed, the perfidity of many in Congress got us into this mess to begin with.  What has been made very clear by events of the past week is this: The proposed Congressional emergency “Economic Stimulus Plan” is a pork-laden joke that would benefit the special interests of individual Congressmen more than it does the people. If enacted, it will further perpetuate the nanny-state and insult the American people.

What’s more, in a Fox News appearance this week, political analyst, Dick Morris, had some disturbing predictions about the short and long-term effects of the Stimulus Package congress and Obama are bent on passing. Short-term, he said, the billions to be pumped into the economy in the form of stimulus checks to consumers and tax cuts to business will be saved by consumers and put into CDs or other accounts by business owners. It will NOT be pumped back into the economy in the form of purchases, as intended.  The effect, Morris projected, will be sharply increased interest rates that will lead to serious inflation in a year or two.

Bottom Line: The free market system needs to be empowered to do what government cannot. It is America’s business community and workers who have the talent, common sense and creativity to work and produce our way out of this mess; the government does not.

I may not know much, but I do know that if I am broke, borrowing a million dollars may make me feel good for a while, but I will be in a much bigger mess very shortly. When it comes to Washington, the inmates are running the asylum! JRI
