Sunday, I took an outdoor fitness boot camp class offered by a contractor from my wife’s business, Turning Point Fitness (more about that in a future write-up–she’s a phenomenal entrepreneur). The woman instructing the class really got my heart rate pumping (no, not like that…fitness people…fitness). Overall, I’m in really good shape, so experiencing a challenging workout is of some consequence.
I thought, "Hey, I’m really working here…and I’m really enjoying this." Engaging in some sort of fitness on most days, I wondered why my enjoyment seemed to be riding higher than normal. Of course it was a beautiful day, I was outside, and close to nature but the most important aspect was the good old fashioned hard work…and the rewarding feeling from accomplishing something of value to me.
Then I wondered, "Well if this feels so good, why don’t you push yourself like this all the time"? I couldn’t answer that but it suddenly occurred to me: I’m at my best when I have a coach or mentor pushing me. Remembering back on my life, I’ve always felt strongest and most successful when I had some trusted mentor either driving me toward my goals or providing valuable feedback on my journey. In contrast, when I isolate myself or I lack that guide/coach-like person in my life, I tend to feel a bit lost and fail to achieve as readily.
Most entrepreneurs I know maintain a rather Avant-garde-like approach to running their business. They amazingly field everything with almost super-human capabilities. Despite this, even the best of us will achieve even more if we stop and truly examine what it is we need to flourish. I’m at my best with a mentor/guide. What do you need?
