Vacuum Marks
By Bill Sheridan on May 16, 2007 in Other Voices
My wife and I lead a very simple lifestyle. We don’t drive fancy cars. Our home is pleasant but modest. No country club membership or trips to Hawaii.
However, we do occasionally reward ourselves with a luxury item or two to celebrate our success. One such reward is to employ a cleaning person every couple of weeks.
It’s always a treat to walk in after a hard day at work to find our home all ’spic and span’ without either of us lending a hand to the effort. The thing that never fails to strike both of us as we enter our home is the way the cleaning person leaves her ‘just been vacuumed’ marks on the carpet. It is the last thing she does each time and her signature statement that says, "I’ve been here. I’ve done my job and aren’t you glad? I know you’ll be happy to see me again."
Without a doubt—she’s right!
My question to you: What ‘vacuum marks’ have YOU left for your customer or prospect at the end of your interaction? What have you said or done that will make him/her want to hear from you again? To utilize your service? To buy your product?
Whether you know it or not, you are leaving an impression on every call. Make it a positive one that will be appreciated.
Leave your mark!

Your article reminded me that my bride, Sue, and I once had a cleaning
lady who could also work magic with a vac, leaving an orderly series of
“sweep peaks” (to coin a phrase) resembling shark fins in our wall-to-wall.
Alas, Luci retired a dozen years ago, and Sue and I have been unable to find
anyone quite as talented to replace her. My guess: Your gal and ours
instinctively knew branding was good for business.
