NEGOTIATING MEANS WIN/WIN

When I was young(er), I saw business dealings as winner-take-all propositions.  I wanted the whole pie!

Then I learned that the best way to get what you want is to help others get what they want.  Rather than battling it out with competitors in a bunkhouse brawl in which everybody came out bloodied, I now have dozens of friends and associates.  We all work together these days and, amazingly, we each end up sharing a much bigger piece of the pie.

The bottom line:  The name of the game is not screw your neighbor, the customer or a competitor.  Instead, long-term business survivors know it’s all about win/win deals.   So, work hard.  Make money.  Have fun.  Oh, and play nice. — JRIngrisano

It is possible that, in making other people
wealthier, happier, and more secure, you
will have more of your own needs satisfied.
This is, in fact, an ideal result of any
negotiation.”

It has always been a belief of mine that “what goes around comes around”. Screw your your neighbor it more than likely it will come back to haunt you. That could be sooner or it could be later but eventually it will catch up with you.

Ross, I agree. I know some guys who have acually said to me, “Why should I help you? What’s in it for me?” All of them are now sad, lost souls, stuck in small jobs and angry at the world.

However, it is amazing how those who offer to help and share and be above board — how this cream rises to the top … no, not necessarily right away, but always over time. JRI

    John,

The guys, who have said “Why should I help you and being angry at the world etc. All of that does not suprise me one bit. Some people just do not understand why helping someone else could ever benefit them. And yeah some things are over time as you said. It would be nice if everything we could benefit now instead of later but that isn’t the way the world works.

Plus it is just plain nice to help others if one can.

I agree, I have noticed more and more people coming to realize this - James Brausch is always saying this on his blog too - and it just makes sense to do things this way. Both people can come out ahead. It just takes a little thought on how to do it.
